Public Information Requests

The City of Shenandoah has established guidelines in accordance with the Public Information Act (formerly Open Records Act) to ensure that all records in the possession of and pertaining to the operation of the governmental body are available to the public through a systematic and centralized process.

Public Information Act Records Requests

The Act is triggered when a person submits a request to a governmental body. The request must ask for records or information already in existence. The Act does not require a governmental body to create new information, to do legal research, or to answer questions. All people who request public information have the responsibility to submit a written request according to a governmental body’s reasonable procedures.

Records Inspection

Keep all appointments to inspect records and to pick up copies.  Failure to keep appointments may result in delaying opportunity to inspect the information at the time requested.

Turnaround Time

Responses to open records requests are typically made within ten business days from the day that they are first received.  If a request is very large or if it requires consultation with the Attorney General's office with regard to disclosing certain information, the response time will take longer. In these cases, the person making the request will be notified that more time is required and for what reason.
